Intern – Metallography and Materials Characterization in Corporate Research & Technology (m/f/x)

Role Overview

In this internship, you will support Hilti’s materials research team by conducting material related investigations and analysis. You will contribute to investigations of metallic materials related to manufacturing processes and product performance in close collaboration with materials experts and research engineers. Your hands-on approach and creative thinking will be essential to our success.

This internship position has a flexible start date and runs for at least 3 months, preferably 6 months or longer.

What you’ll do

As an intern in metallography and materials characterization, you will work closely with materials experts and research engineers on failure analysis and research projects related to metallic materials. You will prepare metallographic samples and characterize them.

Through your daily work, you will gain practical experience in metallography, microstructural characterization, and laboratory testing while developing a deeper understanding of material behaviour, manufacturing processes, and failure mechanisms. You will learn how laboratory data supports engineering decisions and product development activities.

You will document and interpret characterization results, contribute to technical reports and presentations, and help maintain high standards of quality and reproducibility in the laboratory. Strong attention to detail, a structured working approach, and an interest in materials science are essential for success in this role.

Although metallography will be your primary focus, you will be part of an interdisciplinary materials team that also works in the fields of corrosion and tribology. Depending on project needs, you may therefore gain exposure to selected activities in these areas as well.

What you’ll bring

To help you succeed, we will provide you with the needed training, support, and guidance in our laboratory environment. Here’s what you’ll need to bring with you:

  • You are studying Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • You have an interest in materials and materials characterization.
  • First experience in a laboratory environment or with experimental testing methods is a plus.
  • You work carefully and in a structured way
  • You enjoy hands on laboratory work and collaboration in an international technical team.
