What’s the role?

 As a Technical Architect, you will play a key role in shaping and evolving complex, business‑critical systems within Hilti’s global digital landscape. You will work hands‑on with engineering teams to design, guide, and govern modern backend architectures built on Java, Spring Boot, and AWS, while leveraging modern engineering tools, including AI‑assisted development, to improve design quality, delivery speed, and technical decision‑making.

This is a senior individual contributor role with strong architectural ownership, where you’ll balance strategic thinking with practical execution, influencing how teams build, integrate, and operate distributed systems at scale.

What You'll do

• Define and evolve backend and integration architectures for complex, distributed systems, ensuring scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
• Act as a technical authority and sparring partner for development teams, providing architectural direction while staying close to implementation.
• Design system boundaries, APIs, and integration patterns that support enterprise‑grade workflows and external system integrations.
• Guide teams on cloud‑native design principles, leveraging AWS services to build secure, highly available solutions.
• Collaborate closely with product owners, engineers, and other architects to translate business needs into sustainable technical designs.
• Drive architectural consistency and technical quality across multiple teams while allowing appropriate autonomy.
• Review designs, participate in key technical decisions, and help resolve complex technical challenges.
• Support non‑functional requirements such as performance, security, observability, and operational excellence.
• Use modern engineering tools, including AI‑assisted development and analysis, to accelerate solution design, validate architectural options, and reduce unnecessary manual effort. 
• Apply critical judgement when using automation or AI support, ensuring design decisions, code quality, and system behaviour remain well understood and intentional. 
• Continuously improve development workflows and technical practices, identifying opportunities where tooling and automation can raise team productivity and quality

• Mentor senior engineers and tech leads, helping grow architectural thinking within the engineering community.
• Contribute to shared standards, reference architectures, and best practices across the organization.
• Actively participate in architecture discussions across domains, aligning local solutions with global platforms.

What You’ll Bring

• At least 7 years of professional software development experience, with prior responsibility as a Technical Architect, Tech Lead, or Senior Engineer owning system design decisions.
• Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot, with a solid understanding of modular, testable backend architectures.
• Practical experience designing and operating distributed systems in a cloud environment, preferably AWS.
• Proven ability to design APIs and integration patterns (REST, event‑driven, asynchronous communication) suitable for enterprise‑scale systems.
• Experience balancing short‑term delivery with long‑term architectural sustainability.
• Strong understanding of non‑functional requirements such as reliability, scalability, security, and observability.
• Hands‑on mindset: comfortable reviewing code, validating designs through implementation, and staying close to real systems.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• A collaborative approach, with the confidence to challenge ideas constructively and influence without formal authority.
• Comfortable working with modern developer tooling, including AI‑assisted coding, design, and analysis tools, as part of day‑to‑day engineering work. 
• Strong engineering judgement and a pragmatic mindset. Able to adopt new tools quickly while understanding their limitations. 
• Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to evolve how you build software as technology and practices change.

Nice to have:

• Experience working in a global or multi‑team environment.
• Exposure to ERP‑adjacent systems, integration platforms, or enterprise procurement flows.
• Familiarity with domain‑driven design, event‑driven architectures, or similar architectural styles.
• Experience experimenting with or integrating AI‑assisted tools into development workflows to improve productivity or code quality.
